Honourary Artistic Director: Josh Smandych

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way the brain functions, and although some concussions can cause a temporary loss of consciousness, many do not. For Josh Smandych, the honourary artistic director for the Northern Lights helmet, when he rung his bell back in September 2014, he was left seeing stars. The experience of his concussion, and the memories that followed, led to the inspiration behind Mitchel Malyk’s Northern Lights helmet.

By definition, art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. More often than not, art is assumed to take shape with the strokes of a paintbrush, or the lines of a pencil.

Upon meeting for the first time, Emily, Kimberly, and Kim learned that they have something in common: Healing. It is something that they have either all gone through, or are currently going through. For Emily, it is recovering from a concussion that she sustained while playing soccer. For Kimberly, it was the loss of her older sister, Gillian, to cancer just over one year ago. For Kim, it was recovering from a stress fracture in her back. To say that these girls have all had to stare adversity in the eye is an understatement.
